Unit Group 3122: Civil Engineering Draftspersons and Technicians

Civil Engineering Draftspersons and Technicians are responsible for assisting in civil engineering research, design, construction, operations and maintenance.

Indicative Skill Level

In Australia and New Zealand

Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with the qualifications and experience outlined below.

In Australia:

AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)

In New Zealand:
NZQF Diploma (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)

At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
Registration or licensing may also be required.

Tasks:

  • Conducting of laboratory and field tests of soils and construction materials and collection of data from traffic surveys
  • Finalizing charts, sketches, designs, plans and tabulations for various civil works such as water supply, drainage, roads, dams, bridges, sewage reticulation systems and other structures.
  • Inspecting civil engineering works, and organising and supervising maintenance and repair work
  • Estimating the cost of material and making sure that the finished works are within the regulations, specifications and provisions laid in the contract. 
  • Collecting, carrying out computations and analysing data
  • Interpreting work assignment instructions, applying appropriate procedures and selecting equipment
  • Directing and performing fieldwork and laboratory testing
